What began as a strategy to promote a sense of community among project participants turned out to be fertile ground for growing lifelong friendships. Thanks to our fun-loving social committee (Jennifer Choi, Megan Curtis, Susan Baker, Vanessa Larkin and Sherwin Lacaille), we were able to enjoy a variety of social events.
On the first Saturday at the Project, we ventured past the confines of Redlands to visit the great Pacific Ocean and enjoyed a day at one of Orange county's finest beaches, Corona del Mar. It was a great time of bonding and getting to know each other. The following Tuesday was spent at the Magical Kingdom, Disneyland. It was a long day, but the rides, the overpriced food, and the whole experience of just hangin' with the crew was worth every penny of our discounted tickets.
Fourth of July was spent at the lovely home of Janet and Rex Howard with a grand barbeque, pool party, and a fun talent show. Participants in the talent show shined like stars with various acts including interpretive dance, a gymnastics routine, a mind-blowing magic show, and inspiring musical acts. And who could forget the Miss America contest including the lovely Miss Nebraska (or should I say Mr. Nebraska)? As the day came to a close, we were all reunited at the balcony of our dorm to witness a phenomenal firework show.
How does one date in today's modern society as a young single Christian? We soon learned how by going out on creative group dates. On a Saturday night small groups of students were matched with small groups of the opposite sex with the ladies planning one half of the evening and the gentlemen planning the other half. This magical night was filled with romantic dinners, scavenger hunts, survivor 'get to know you question' games, and ceramic decorating. This was definitely a dating experience like no other.
Other social events during the project included fireworks in Crestline, a day in San Diego, a community service project in L.A., and a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
All in all, the social events provided a great means of fellowship among the brothers and sisters of the project. Just looking at the pictures we've taken will bring on a flood of memories and incite a smile on every face.
