Leadership is Growing Day by Day, not in a Day
Vanessa Larkin, Nursing Student, Seattle University Travis Hageman, Medical Student, Univ. of Nebraska College of Medicine

As I entered the hospital room for my first post-METS spiritual history interview, I felt a strong resemblance to Moses discovering God's plans for him with the Israelites. Like Moses, I bargained with the Lord, "Can't you choose someone else to address these unpredictable spiritual issues? I am not qualified." ::

Initially, in my mind, the great commission was conditional to what I thought could work. Over the course of this Project, God transformed my thinking, like Moses, by developing the character of spiritual leadership.

During the METS conference, I began to develop a foundation of how God could use my profession for His glory. Like Moses, I had the staff, and God needed to show me His power to turn it into a snake. He used my first few experiences with patients to teach me: "I will help you speak and will teach you what to do" (Exodus 4:15). From that, I truly understood that I was not alone in the application of the great commission.

Several Project seminars addressed the power of the Holy Spirit and how we need to allow Him to guide our interactions. I felt unsure of how to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's guidance. God answered my prayers with Mr. E.

As I sat with Mr. E in the hospital room, listening to the amazing amount of hardship he had endured with a son lost, a daughter battling, and his recovery from cancer, I was overwhelmed. I felt the Holy Spirit tugging at me to reach forward, take his hands, and pray encouragement over him. As Mr. E wiped tears from his eyes he said, "It's not by chance that you came to my room."

Undeniably, I met the Holy Spirit where He led, and I clumsily followed. The spiritual growth I have experienced in this short month is only by God's hand. When I first arrived at the Conference, I was resistant to the idea of sharing with patients while providing medical care, but I have grown to recognize the Holy Spirit's calling to share the Good News with all He has been preparing, even my patients. Through prayer, God granted me understanding of submission to His agenda and waiting for the Holy Spirit to guide my path.

As I head home to an environment less conducive to patient spirituality, God is creating an enormous excitement in my heart to share what I have learned here with other professionals and students. Just like Moses, I have taken a leap of faith, seen Him work wonders, and when difficult times come, I remember where my confidence lays. My responsibility is to be prayerful, obedient, and spirit-filled and yield myself completely to God.
